Sab Chapter 1 Part II (9/14/08)

When Sab and Teresa meet at midnight, he tells her that by creating his happiness she will be creating her own. She is confused by this statement, but then listen to his incredible declaration of love. Teresa listened carefully as Sab's true emotions and feelings are shown to her during which she forgets his color and class. She now sees a man passionately in love. Sab is filled with desperation, emotion, pain, unhappiness, and torment. However, we are still left with the question of why Sab's happiness will help Teresa's.

From his point of view, his happiness will help hers because she will become rich and be able to marry Enrique, whom she loves. The real question is, what makes Sab think that Teresa will go for this? I mean, he spends several pages telling her what a jerk Enrique is, and how he isn't good enough for Carlota just to turn around and suggest that Teresa marry him...talk about disrespecting a girl. Despite his status as a subversive of racial and gender categories, I wonder if there isn't just a little bit of a 19th-century chauvinist lurking deep in Sab's character. In the end, he almost seems to see himself and the lovely Carlota as superior to the homely Teresa.
